Amgen Tour of California, the Big Bear Climb coming to Big Bear Lake, May 18, 2012.
Big Bear Lake is proud to be hosting the finish of Stage 6 of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California, the Big Bear Climb. If the 2010 route was a killer, this slightly toned down route will be a crusher. Stage 6 will be all about strategy as the riders will still be feeling the sting of the Bakersfield Time Trial from the day before.
After a cruise down historic Sierra Highway, the racers will head into the Angeles National Forest. After a short stretch on Angeles Forest Highway, the route will turn onto Mt. Emma Road. Following the first climb of the day and then a descent to Fort Tejon Road, the first KOM at Mountain High ski area will be reached via a 12-mile climb to a 7,000-foot summit at Angeles Crest Highway. There will be a brief respite as the riders descend into Wrightwood and then over to Highway 138. The route will once again go vertical as it passes through Crestline and Lake Arrowhead, and then onto the Rim of the World Highway. Entering the Big Bear area, the riders will take the northern route around Big Bear Lake and then tackle the last ascent to the finish at a more than 7,000-foot elevation at the Snow Summit ski area.
If you are interested in joining the World's Best Cyclists as they take on the greatest stage in America's biggest cycling race, we encourage you to participate in the "King of the Mountain Experience." The race is open to all levels of cyclists and will take place on race day, May 18, 2012. For more information or to enter please visit the King of the Mountain website. Big Bear Vacations is a proud sponsor of this event and we are offering lodging specials that include a chance to win a VIP Race Package. Visit our Specials page or call 1-866-668-5455 for more information about how to win this VIP Experience.

First recorded Bald Eagle Chick born in Big Bear Lake
A bald eagle chick was born in Big Bear Lake recently, which is believed to be the first baby eagle born in the San Bernardino Mountains in over 30 years. Observers believe the bald eagle chick was born on February 10th but was hidden in the nest that is 3 feet wide and a foot deep. The chick was discovered by biologists while doing a count on February 11th and leading a field trip for North Shore Elementary School Students. The new baby has been given the nickname Jack, named after Jack Lubecki, a longtime eagle count volunteer who passed a few years ago. Jack was born to a mating pair of eagles named Ricky and Lucy. The bird's gender is still unknown because it is being viewed from over a half-mile away. Jack was grey, fuzzy, and about 10 inches tall when he first hatched, but in the past 6 weeks hase become a dark brown color and is already much bigger. Jack was hatched in a nest that was built about 5 years ago in a dead tree that eagles have been adding to over the years; biologists are unsure if it was built by these same eagles. Ricky and Lucy have done well in protecting the chick from our recent storms and are expected to take up permanent residence here to protect Jack. The baby chick is not expected to fly for 70-98 days. To avoid disturbing the sensitive birds The Forest Service has closed the surrounding picnic areas. They are being observed using spotting scopes and can be viewed from Dana Point Park in Fawnskin. The Discovery Center Volunteers are monitoring the baby and a viewing station will be set up on weekends and visitors are welcomed. For hours and information, contact the Big Bear Discovery Center, 909-382-2790.Friday, March 23, 2012
