More Winter...

Looks like another storm is headed our way bringing with it the possibility of a decent amount of snow and some cold temps. If you are headed up the mountain for the New Year make sure to be prepared for winter conditions.

In addition to cold temps and lots of snow...these winter storms can bring some chaos as well. Check out this picture of HWY 330 after that last big snow. Needless to say, this road is going to be closed for the near future. Make sure to check out the road conditions prior to heading up the mountain as well.

Playing in the Snow!

The town of Big Bear is very crowded this time of year and it is always nice to see the masses of people that come up for the snow get what the were looking for. These past couple of storms have left the mountain nice and white and while I stay away from the resorts this time of year, there is plenty of snow to go play in! So get out and enjoy it!

#11 - Snowshoeing

One of the most enjoyable activities on our list of 100 Things To Do has got to be Snowshoeing. I think the thing that makes is so special is the ability to get to places not usually to easy to access. Climbing hills becomes much easier and there is really no need to follow a trail. Mix that with the "new" feeling that each snowfall creates and it seems you are in another world.

Winter Wonderland!

The storm has moved on and left us with a couple feet of nice fresh powder! I got the snowshoes out this morning and took the trek up to the top of Gold Mountain. The peaks on the North Shore get a lot of sunshine so typically don't hold snow for too long, so it was especially nice to get up there today and take in the view.

Winter Weather!

This is what winter is all about! So far Big Bear has been in the same boat as the rest of Southern California...lots of rain. But it looks like the system moving through today might bring us the type of precipitation we're looking for...

"Cloudy with increasingly gusty winds and progressively colder temperatures. Isolated thunderstorms are expected, with very heavy bursts of snow possible. Snow continunes heavy, with snow levels dropping to 5,000 feet (lower under any thudnerstorms). Areas of blowing and drifting snow are expected. Snow showers are expected to end overnight. 10 to 14 inches of additional snowfall expected"

Check the Current Forecast Here!

Be prepared for winter weather in the mountains. Always carry chains in your vehicle and check the latest road conditions before heading up the mountain!

Currently Hwy 330 to Hwy 18 from San Bernardino IS CLOSED. The best way to travel up the mountain during winter conditions is the back way through Lucerne Valley. This way typically sees the least severe weather and is the shortest "mountain" drive.

Hwy 18 From Lucerne Valley to Big Bear is the best road in Winter Conditions

#10 Snowboard Bear Mountain

#10 On our list of 100 Things to Do...Snowboard Bear Mountain! I got up on the mountain for the first time this season and despite it being very warm out the snow was pretty fun. It must have been almost 80 degrees at the base of the mountain! Hopefully the warm weather won't last and we can get some more snow on the ground! Check out this quick video I made up on the slopes today!
